Jalan Bukit Merah Pedestrian Overhead Bridge Artwork: Take the stairs and give someone a lift!
About the project: As part of the effort to build a convenient, well-connected, and inclusive land transport system for all, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) built new lifts at the pedestrian overhead bridge across Jalan Bukit Merah, connecting residents of nearby neighbourhoods including Kim Tian, Jalan Membina and Jalan Bukit Merah. Opened on 6 May 2023, the new lifts will surely benefit many elderly residents and those who may have mobility issues.
In conjunction with the opening of the new lifts, LTA collaborated with Tanjong Pagar Town Council and the People’s Association for a placemaking project that will be visually engaging and inspiring for our residents to take the stairs. An art competition was held to come up with two designs that will encourage residents to use the stairs, not only for their health and wellbeing, but to also enable those who need the lifts the most, the priority to use them! Residents sent in more than 50 designs and it was really heart-warming to see so many people interested in making their neighbourhoods a more colourful and vibrant place, and a home with heart.
About the artwork: Artist Chanel Tan said, “My goal was to create a simple yet meaningful design that conveys the message of taking the stairs clearly and aesthetically. Hopefully more people can appreciate some colorful touches to our public spaces!”
